With so many PR professionals to choose from, it can be a difficult decision on where to start with your search. From big well known PR agencies, to boutique agencies and freelancers, below are 6 tips on how to choose the right PR for your brand.
1) BACKGROUND- What’s their background? Who have they worked with in the past? What
experience have they had working with brands like yours? Can they show you examples of
coverage from previous brands they’ve worked with? Ask for their current and past client base to help in finding out if they have a background in working with brands similar to yours.
2) PASSION- The reason I specialised in beauty & wellness PR is because I’m passionate about it both personally and professionally, so if you’re an interiors brand, or a tech start up- find a PR that understands what you do, and ultimately is excited about it!
3) PERSONALITY-. You’re likely to be working with a PR for at least 3 months, so it’s important the PR understands your business, that you understand the process of PR and that you ultimately get on!
4) BUDGET- Many brands think they can’t afford PR when they speak to agencies with hefty fees and overheads. Speak to a few different agencies of all sizes, freelancers and boutique agencies until you find a PR that works for you and your budget. There are also PR consultants and agencies who offer FREE tips and advice on doing your own PR, as well as a courses and workshops which you can do to learn everything about DIY PR.
5) SIZE- Bigger doesn’t always mean better. It can be tempting to go straight to a big well known PR agency, but smaller agencies and freelancers are often hungrier and can be more
specialised. Smaller agencies or freelancers might also be better experienced working with start-up brands and are super proactive with a hands on approach, whilst being dedicated to getting you the very best results possible.
6) TRANSPARENCY- If a PR *guarantees* coverage that is a warning sign. No PR can
guarantee coverage, they can introduce you to their close contacts and create newsworthy
angles, but it’s also important that they manage your expectations and are transparent about the process.
